Moody Center
Austin is no ordinary city, and Moody Center is no ordinary arena.
The Challenge
Austin is no ordinary city, and Moody Center is no ordinary arena. Building Image Group was brought in to execute the sponsorship signage package — a scope that, by its very nature, arrives late in the game. Sponsorship deals close fast, and with them comes an immediate demand for design, fabrication, and installation. The pressure was immense: a fixed, immovable opening date, a world-class venue, and a sign package that had to be designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed within an extraordinarily compressed window of time. There was no room for error and no flexibility in the schedule. The show — quite literally — had to go on.

Our BIG Solution
BIG partnered closely with Gensler to work through multiple design iterations, bridging the gap between architectural design intent and real-world manufacturability. Many of the original high-concept sign proposals, while visually compelling, were not feasible to fabricate as drawn. BIG's in-house engineering team collaborated directly with Gensler to problem-solve each element — finding the most effective, buildable path to bring their vision to life without compromising the design integrity that a venue of this caliber demanded.
From budgeting alongside the architect in early project phases through final installation, BIG was a true partner at every stage — translating bold creative ideas into physical reality on a timeline that left no margin for revision.
And then there's the napkin. Early in the project's life, Minister of Culture Matthew McConaughey sketched his vision for the arena — a round, sunken bowl of a venue — on a napkin. That doodle became the seed of what Moody Center is today. Gensler took that concept and designed a world-class arena around it. BIG honored that founding moment by immortalizing McConaughey's original sketch in a custom commemorative plaque installed within the venue — a piece of authentic Austin storytelling built right into the building.

Fabrication & Install
The opening date was April 20th. Willie Nelson was the first act to take the stage. That date was not a target — it was a fact.
BIG mobilized its full fabrication and installation capabilities to meet one of the most demanding timelines in the company's history. The sponsorship package — which is always among the last scopes finalized in any venue project — had to be designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed in a fraction of the time typically allotted. Every department was aligned, every resource was committed, and every day on the schedule mattered.
Additional challenges included:
- Navigating complex multi-stakeholder approvals across Gensler, AECOM, JE Dunn, Oak View Group, Live Nation/C3 Presents, and UT Austin simultaneously
- Active construction site coordination on the dense UT Austin campus, immediately adjacent to Mike A. Myers Stadium
- High-concept to high-craft translation — engineering solutions for architectural sign concepts that required significant technical reworking to be manufacturable at scale
- Material and finish complexity across a wide range of custom applications including blackened steel, stainless steel, painted finishes, edgelit elements, and architectural-grade custom lettering
The deadline was met. Willie took the stage. Austin had its arena.
